Yhuri Cruz
BIO
Visual artist, writer and playwright.
YEAR OF RESIDENCE
2023
ORIGIN
1991, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. Lives and works in Rio de Janeiro, RJ.
He develops his artistic and literary practice based on textual creations that involve fictions, performative propositions – which the artist calls scenes – and installations in dialogue with systems of power, institutional critique, relations of oppression, healing performances, subjective rescues and repressed social violence.
Yhuri Cruz uses aspects of collective and individual memory, understanding the category of memory linked to intimate scares and hauntings, like ghosts that traverse time and space and construct canonical and dissident forms of subjectivities and sociability. His most recent visual and performative productions tend to relate to monuments, fables, performativity of words and stone sculptures.
Cruz was nominated for the PIPA Prize in 2019 and, in the same year, he held “Pretofagia”, his first solo exhibition at the Hélio Oiticica Municipal Arts Center – Rio de Janeiro/ RJ. In 2019, he won the Reynaldo Roels Award with the public installation “The Horse is Rise: Monument to Oxalá and the Workers”. His works are in public and private collections.
